And similar to the rumen, the soil cannot deliver nutrients to growing plants very efficiently without the help of microorganisms. There are always a few weeds in my corn, but I don’t mind. That’s because I generally grow two years of alfalfa followed by one year of corn. If I were running a corn/bean rotation I wouldn’t want to leave any weeds in my corn because they would go to seed and then I would have weeds in my beans, which can be hard to control. A few weeds with a corn/alfalfa rotation are not as much of a problem as with corn/beans. As an organic farmer it is pretty difficult to be 100 percent weed free, so I don’t aim to be.

Organic Farming A farmer came up to me after a meeting a while back with some questions about organic management. He was transitioning his farm to organic, so that spring he worked up his land and put on 8,000 gallons of liquid dairy manure. Then he planted soybeans. ” My answer, “You don’t put on 8,000 gallons of liquid manure and then plant soybeans! ” Organic farming requires more management than conventional farming because in organic farming there are no easy fixes. If you let the weeds get away from you, you can’t turn to herbicides to control the problem.
